Importing Indian Basmati Rice: A Complete Guide for Global Buyers

Grades, quality parameters, container loading in MT, documentation and payment terms every importer of Indian rice should confirm before placing an order.

India is the world's largest rice exporter, and Basmati remains its most recognised premium grain. For a first-time importer, the difference between a profitable contract and a costly one is almost always in the specification sheet — not the price.

Understanding Indian rice grades

Basmati varieties

1121, 1509, Pusa and Traditional Basmati differ in average grain length, elongation after cooking and aroma retention. 1121 Sella and Steam dominate Middle East demand, while Traditional Basmati is preferred by premium retail and HoReCa buyers in Europe.

Non-Basmati varieties

IR-64 parboiled, Sona Masoori, PR-11/PR-14 and Swarna serve high-volume institutional demand across Africa and South-East Asia, with broken percentages of 5%, 25% or 100% quoted separately.

Quality parameters to lock in your contract

  • Moisture: 13% maximum
  • Purity: 99% after sortex cleaning
  • Broken grain percentage agreed in writing
  • Average grain length and elongation ratio
  • Foreign matter, damaged and discoloured grain limits

Container capacity in metric tonnes

Plan volumes in MT rather than in loose bag counts. A 20ft container carries 18–20 MT and a 40ft container 26–28 MT depending on bag size and packing pattern. Part loads from 5 MT are possible for trial orders.

Export documentation

  • Commercial invoice and packing list
  • Bill of lading
  • Certificate of origin
  • Phytosanitary certificate
  • Fumigation certificate where required
  • Third-party inspection report on request

Payment terms and lead times

Daukshya Exim works on T/T advance or LC at sight. Typical lead time after PI confirmation is 12–21 days depending on packaging and private-label requirements.
